A romantic treat to share with someone close to you is Chocolate Fondue. To make a fondue requires a special pot designed for the purpose of making a fondue and special long handled forks. A good serviceable fondue pot that uses Sterno for fuel can be purchased for as little as ten dollars. They range in price up to several hundred dollars for electrically operated pots, complete with the long fondue forks you will need.
Preparation of chocolate
To enjoy an excellent chocolate fondue depends largely on the chocolate you choose. If you have a favorite chocolate bar, you can use four of them to make the coating for your fondue. Break the chocolate into pieces and place them in the fondue pot. Do not put the heat on under the chocolate at this time.
Preparation of Fruit
Clean and remove the caps from two dozen strawberries. Set them aside on a platter. Cut up a fresh pineapple into bite size pieces and arrange them also on the platter. Open a jar of maraschino cherries, drain them, and place the contents on the platter with the other fruit. You may add still more fruit such as apple slices or seedless grapes to the platter.
Melting the Chocolate
If you have a fondue pan that is heated with Sterno, it is time to light the fuel now and place it under the chocolate. If your pan heats the chocolate electrically, turn it on now. Watch the chocolate as it begins to melt, stirring it occasionally. When the chocolate is thoroughly melted, it is ready to serve. Turn the heat down under the mix.
Serving the Fondue
Place the fondue pot with its source of heat on a table close to where you and your partner are sitting. It must be conveniently placed so you both have access to it. Situate the platter of fruit so that each of you can select bites of fruit from it by piercing them with your fondue fork. With a piece of fruit on your fork, dip it into the chocolate fondue and twirl it around, making sure that it is well coated with chocolate. Remove the chocolate covered piece of fruit from the fondue pot and eat it at once.
Whipped Cream (optional)
If you wish you can prepare previously an eight ounce carton of heavy cream by whipping it until it stands in peaks. Sweeten it to taste. Dip the chocolate covered fruit bites into the whipped cream for a gourmet taste experience.
